I’m reading Genesis again, one of my favorite books. In it, you
find the foundations for so many of our core beliefs. (Creation, marriage,
Jesus’ role in redemption, the fall of man, the penalty for sin—and all that in
the first three chapters.)
Every time I read the creation story, something different begs
my attention. This time, it’s the power of God’s word.
And God said . . .
and there was.
And God said . . .
and it was so.
God didn’t have to do anything except command it . . . and
it happened. Already. Done. Made. And it was good.
What kind of power is that? It’s awesome. It’s beyond
comprehension.
It’s God. Period.
In the Old Testament, we read many times that the word of
God came to a prophet. It was this same powerful word. It was the same word
that created the world.
Jesus is called the Word in John 1. The Bible says, In the beginning
was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in
the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not
any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of
men (John 1:1-4).
See how God links Genesis 1 with
Jesus? Jesus was Co-creator with God and the Holy Spirit (Genesis 1:2). The
Trinity—God in three Persons—created the world. The Word was spoken, and it was so . . . and there was.
Another amazing verse about Jesus:
Who being the brightness of his glory,
and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the
word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the
right hand of the Majesty on high (Hebrews
1:3). Jesus actually holds the world together by the power of His word!
I think it’s really interesting
that scientists are trying to find out exactly what is the “God particle” or
Higgs boson. It’s what gives everything mass, holds everything together. Do you
have an idea what it might be, based on Hebrews 1:3 (above)?
Why is it that opposing forces
stay together in an atom? Hmmmm . . . Could it be the power of the word of God?
Read these verses about the power
of God:
- The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is full of majesty (Psalm 29:4).
- He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion (Jeremiah 10:12).
- And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth (Matthew 28:18).
- But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins (Mark 2:10).
- And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power. . . . (Jesus then casts out a devil from a man.) And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out (Luke 4:32, 36).
God’s Word has awesome power.
We have the privilege of owning a
Bible, God’s powerful Word written down. We recognize its life-changing power
as it transforms our hearts. (Romans 12:2)
We recognize Jesus as Creator,
along with God the Father and the Holy Spirit.
The Bible
is that same amazing, powerful Word.
I also really enjoy reading Genesis. It's one of my favourite books :)
