Reading through the Bible can be fun. Today, I read some
compliments in Song of Solomon. (I’ll leave out the more “personal” ones.) What
would you think if your spouse said this to you?
You have
doves’ eyes. (4:1)
Your hair
is like a flock of goats. (4:1, 6:5)
Your teeth
are like a flock of sheep. (4:2, 6:6)
Your neck
is like a tower of ivory. (7:4)
Your eyes
are like fish pools. (7:4)
Your hair
is like purple. (7:5)
Years ago, I tried the “flock of goats” and “flock of sheep”
compliments on my husband, reading them word for word from my Bible. He looked
at me quizzically and then cracked up.
Perhaps, in Solomon’s time, these compliments produced a
better effect. Just think how flattered the bride was to hear her neck was like
a tower of ivory and her eyes like fish pools!
Gotta enjoy ancient romance!
Some of those are so funny. I guess maybe they were considered high compliments at the time.
