Some "Not-So-Spiritual" Goals

Dr. Bob Jones, Sr. used to say, “For the Christian, there is no difference between the secular and the sacred; all ground is holy ground, every bush is a burning bush.”

The Bible says, Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31).

In this context, these goals I will share with you—my goals for 2013—aren’t Bible study or prayer goals, but they’re important to my daily life and therefore, they are important to the Lord. He cares about me as a person, too, and I believe He helped me by putting some incredible influences under my blogging nose.

Goal Number 1—Simplify my home.

I purged my closet on New Year’s Eve, using my friend Johanna’s amazing method. It took me much less time than I ever would have anticipated, and, except for buying a storage unit for inside the closet (that I now have room for), I’m done!
I’ve been inspired by both Johanna and by Rachel Meeks, another blogger dedicated to simplifying the home. And yes, they both have children and a husband!

Goal Number 2—Simplify my “filing system.”

“Filing system” has got to go in quotation marks because I keep way too much paper. I need to sort, pitch, photograph, and then file only what’s really important to me. This will definitely take more time than my closet purge or other house projects. I’m not looking forward to this, but it has to be done.

Goal Number 3—Start writing a new book.

I have some ideas swirling around in my head, some already in the computer under “Book ideas.”

Goal Number 4—Get more exercise.

I don’t even want to talk about this one. It’s not easy, and it will take a gargantuan effort. But, it’s necessary for my health, and I know it. (My inspirations for this one are my daughter and a friend named Donna.)

That’s it! I don’t want to put down anything not doable. I want to be realistic.

Do you have any “non-spiritual-but-sacred” goals for the year you would like to share?

Our New Year's Washing Machine "Adventure"

New Year’s Day morning:

I put a load of clothes in the washer, and soon I heard funny sounds. They got gradually louder and more like knocking. At first, the machine worked okay, but when the washer was supposed to spin, it didn’t. It just made a strange humming noise. I called for my husband to come and listen. (He is an amazing handyman.)

True to form, he found the problem. It’s fixable, probably, but our washing machine is twelve years old. We’ve decided to look for a new one soon.

Why do I tell you about our appliance problem?

Because, while I was wringing out the wash by hand, my Purpose Statement for 2013 came to mind: Praise ye the LORD. Praise the LORD, O my soul. While I live will I praise the LORD: I will sing praises unto my God while I have any being (Psalm 146:1-2). I decided to think about reasons to praise God in the middle of my dying washing machine experience.

I will praise God:
  • That I don’t have to wash my clothes by hand every day (like in many, many places of the world). It’s a blessing and a gift that I ever had a clothes washer.
  • That the clothes were finished washing. I didn’t have to re-wash them after getting them out of the washer.
  • That our washer lasted twelve years. (We’re told that most machines here last five. Our last clothes washer lasted almost twenty! Something else to be grateful for.)
  • That my husband is able to locate mechanical problems and make wise decisions.
  • That I remembered to praise the Lord in a not-so-desirable situation.

In every thing (even in dying washers) give thanks:
for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
(1 Thessalonians 5:18)

Do you have an “in everything give thanks” story to tell? We’d love to hear it.
